Sport is an integral part of life in Sion Hill. The sports programme is driven by the PE Department and members of staff. Participating in sport helps promote and develop wholesome attitudes and good social skills as well as further knowledge and understanding of specific sports. Sion Hill and the PE Department encourages the participation of all pupils in extra-curricular activities, however extra-curricular sport is compulsory for all 1st and 2nd year pupils. Pupils must choose a minimum of one after school sport to take part in for the year.

The aims of the PE/Sports Department are:

  • To provide the students with the opportunity to develop their personal, social and physical aspects of their personality through the participation in safe and enjoyable physical activities.
  • To reinforce and develop the students’ knowledge, understanding and skills in various sports from gymnastics to orienteering to hockey etc.
  • To promote a positive attitude towards participation in physical activities and life-long involvement.
  • To develop and encourage the importance of working and co-operating with others.

Hockey, Athletics and Basketball are the winter sports on offer. We field hockey and basketball teams in the Leinster Leagues at minor, junior and senior level. During the winter months we also compete in Cross Country events regularly medalling.

Our extensive summer programme offers Athletics, Tennis, Soccer, Gaelic and Rounders. Our athletics team compete across a range of disciplines in the East Leinster Athletic Championships each year and our tennis squads also compete in the Leinster Leagues where they have enjoyed success. At present we have a very well equipped sports hall, an all-weather pitch and an outside basketball court/tennis court.

The students of Sion Hill are represented by the Sports Committee. This committee is comprised of pupils from 2nd to 6th Year. Aspiring members must apply for positions on the Committee and the PE Department and the Principal review the applications.
