Music at Dominican College Sion Hill
Music is an integral part of school life here in Sion Hill. We believe that all students should be given the opportunity to express themselves through music. There is a long standing tradition of music in the school which is continued in both the music classroom and in our extra-curricular music programme.
We have two voluntary choirs; the School Choir and the Chamber Choir.
The school choir is open to students from 1st to 6th year and rehearses twice a week.
The chamber choir is open to students from 4th to 6th year and entry to the choir is by audition. They also rehearse twice a week.
Both choirs are kept busy throughout the year. They perform as separate choirs as well as joining forces at various events such as choir competitions and our annual School Carol Service.
For any instrumentalists from 1st to 6th year, we have a school orchestra who rehearse once a week. The orchestra provides music for events such as our School Mass, our Carol Service and our School Musical.
‘Where words fail, music speaks’. Hans Christian Andersen
A school musical is produced annually, for which the orchestra provides the instrumental music. Many students get involved both on stage and back stage, on lighting and sound, costumes, make up and front of house.
Recent performances have included: Beauty and the Beast, Annie, The Boyfriend, Fiddler on the Roof, The Sound of Music, Oklahoma and The King & I.
Art Club in Dominican College Sion Hill
Established in 2003, The Art Club (a.k.a. “The Red Stairs”) initially catered for students who didn’t have Art as a chosen subject but expressed an interest in it. Since then, the club has grown in size and stature, and is now responsible for many of the school’s creative and artistic tasks (such as the backdrop for the school musical). The Art Club runs from 3pm to 4pm every Monday afternoon.
